Changing Blog Hosts

Edublogs, our current blog host, was a free blog host designed for educational institutions. sample ContentLinks adIt was ad-free when we first subscribed. Since subscribing, it has twice now implemented advertising over which we have no control. The ContentLink ads appear in blog posts as double-underlined words which result in pop-up ads. If you currently subscribe to this blog, you will no longer receive emails from it. Eventually this blog will be removed.

In order to maintain our site as ad-free, we are forced to change hosts. We have setup a free, and so far ad-free, account with Blogger which is Google’s free blog. We have also moved the blog to the homepage of our site to be more accessible and user-friendly. Blogger also has a few more features that we hope you will enjoy.

Blue Moon Learning

Introduction by JuanitaThursday evening, Amanda Amundrud of Blue Moon Learning spoke to a group at Pierceland School on her methodology of classroom learning environments. The audience consisted of intrigued parents, community members, SCC members, PCS staff, administration and staff from Goodsoil School too. Ms. Amundrud spoke of helping children finding peace and calm in body and mind. She referred to a new generation of children (the Indigo children) that are sensitive and fragile yet highly talented and gifted. Ms. Amundrud encouraged the use of various techniques to help children feel safe and loved in their school. These techniques included “belly” breathing, tapping the head and chest, partner massage as well as a combination of Tai Chi, yoga and meditation. In addition to these techniques, she encourages developing a calm and relaxing classroom atmosphere. This, according to Ms. Amundrud, includes the sound of running water, salt rock crystals, plants and aromatherapy. On Friday, she will work with Mrs. Kaczmar in the Grade 4 classroom creating such an environment. The evening wrapped up with participants attempting various yoga and Tai Chi moves and closing with a didgeridoo meditation. Terry Fox Walk/Run

Donations were still coming in as the Terry Fox Walk concluded on Friday afternoon. As students were enjoying a hot dog and some floor hockey, staff had totaled donations at over $9000. With proceeds from the auction and last minute donations, our grand total was incredibly almost $14000. Ms. Tomke and Mr. Fortune will be sporting new looks by the middle of next week. The support of the community has been phenomenal for this cause. Thank you to all who have helped us with this amazing accomplishment.

Live Auction for Cancer

A lot of work went into the Auction for Cancer and it was well worth it. On Friday, September 19, professional auctioneer, Mr. Johnson and his wife helped to collect over $3700 from the generous hearts of PCS students, staff, parents as well as community members. Besides the retired staffroom chairs, items were donated by local businesses and community members – too numerous to mention. Some of the high-priced items included a pizza for $51, a dollhouse for around $80 and the latest addition to the grade 10 class, a giant Spiderman for $105. The chairs that started it all also went for a good price – around $30 to $40 each. Keeping with the spirit of generousity, one grade 6 student was seen handing out candy from a box that she had just purchased at the auction. Way to go, PCS! We’re that much closer to our goal of $10000 to see Ms. Tomke shave her head and Mr. Fortune shave his legs.

Meet the Staff Night and Fall Fair

Weary from preparations for the Fall Fair, parents can relax, for a while anyway.

Thank you to all the parents, students and extended family members who attended the Meet the Staff Night.  New and old staff were introduced, there was a Smartboard demonstration, a Band Parents Meeting and of course, viewing of the Fall Fair.  Thank you to the SCC members who coordinated the food for the evening.  We look forward to positive communication with families this year.
